For many of us, getting our very own home is a dream— and being able to do that with the person you love is the cherry on top.
However, the caveats tied in with the housing policy could influence how we view relationships alongside our motivation to buy a property. There is a reason why applying for BTO flats has become normalised as a way of broaching the topic of marriage.
While the trajectory of relationships is not something that you could entirely plan, the end of one could be draining not just on yourself, but also your finances.
The couple would have to forfeit a sum— which would increase with how far you are in the purchase of the BTO flat— and the chance to apply for another BTO flat for at least a year. If you do not proceed with the marriage after purchasing a resale flat, you are also likely to incur financial losses as well.
Securing a BTO flat might be part of the recipe for the ‘ideal’ life, but it doesn’t have to be the case.
For one, building a home doesn’t necessarily mean having to purchase a property. A rented space could be as much of a home, if you feel at ease living in it. Co-living would also be a great alternative, if you are inclined towards a more vibrant social space.
